SLO (Service Level Objective)

An SLO is an internal reliability target for a service — such as a percentage of successful requests or availability over a window — that a team commits to and measures against to guide day-to-day decisions.

A Service Level Objective (SLO) is a specific, measurable reliability goal a team sets for a service — for example, a target percentage of successful requests or availability over a rolling window. SLOs are usually set stricter than any external SLA, giving the team a safety margin and a shared definition of “healthy enough.”

An SLO turns reliability into something you can decide with: it defines an error budget, the acceptable amount of unreliability, which teams spend on change and velocity while staying within target.
